City and countryside – identity and space in the 21st century

The complexity of mutual interactions in the peri-urban interface

Kraków, 16-17 May 2019

The conference is dedicated to celebrating
the 70th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Tadeusz Kudłacz, Ph.D.,

The Head of the Department of Regional Economy

Conference programme

Aim of the Conference

The conference aims at identifying research problems that arise from current changes in the relationship between the city and the countryside.

Climate changes and globalization of economic and social processes – regarding the growing importance of information and computer technologies as well as automation – create contemporary conditions for the settlement system. In particular, it concerns the growing importance of suburban zones and functional changes, both economic and social, characterizing today’s urbanized and non-urbanized spaces.

The subject of the scientific reflection is to present the directions of research and attempts to conceptualize the contemporary problems of the city together with its functional area and rural area. It is worth raising – for example – the following questions today:

  1. What is a modern city: a settlement core developed in the process of historical development or a multi-faceted zone with a relatively high intensity of investment and density of housing?
  2. What is or what will be the non-urbanized area in the conditions of progressing suburbanization?
  3. How to take advantage of the relationship between the city and the countryside in the context of a circular economy?
  4. How does the blurring of the differences between the city and the countryside affect local, metropolitan and regional communities?
  5. How to manage area variable multifunctional suburban zones?

The subject of the conference is the reflection on the above-mentioned topics, and any proposed idea on the changing relationship between the city and the countryside is welcome. We invite the participants to present theoretical reflections, research projects or research results, as well as expert studies that in some way lead the scientific community to deepen their knowledge about the conference topic.

We are open to the speeches delivered by scientists, scholars, and practitioners who apply innovative, organizational and implementation program solutions related to the evolution of the role of the city and the countryside and changing relations between them.
